Since 2014, Thorold has seen 4 Niagara Heritage Design Awards for renovations, façade improvements and adaptive reuse plus an honourable mention to the City of Thorold for their Downtown Streetscape Master Plan. In 2009 there were two Lieutenant Governor’s Heritage Awards – the City for Community Leadership and Pam Minns of LACAC for Lifetime Achievement.
“Creepy Canada”, a popular TV show, sent their crew to Maplehurst 1886 (now Keefer Mansion Inn) to assess it for ghosts. There is a secret passage in the Inn which leads not only to a secret room, but up to the widow’s walk on the roof.
Macartney Drug Store (Henderson’s) c.1870 – this building has been a drug store for over 140 years. It has been family-owned by the Hendersons since 1939, and contains an outstanding gallery of historical photographs throughout the store.
The Old Fire Hall 1878 -the basement housed the town police station and jail until the late 1950s. The original fire bell is installed outside the new fire hall.
Thorold’s Carnegie Library 1912, still in use as a private business, was one of 2,500 libraries around the world, funded by Andrew Carnegie.
Egerton Ryerson, considered to be the ”father of public education in Upper Canada” preached at the Beaverdams Methodist Church (c.1832)
The DeCew House c.1808 played a pivotal role in the War of 1812 and the famous walk of Laura Secord.
