Walk Through History

Take a self-guided walking tour throughout the streets of our historical downtown and admire a selection of heritage buildings and sites. Heritage Thorold (Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee) is committed to the identification and preservation of Thorold’s properties and as such, has published 2018 Heritage Thorold Brochure – an informative brochure depicting over 40 properties with an easy-to-follow map. Learn about local memorials, mills, churches, houses, cemeteries, shops, schools, halls and vestiges of the old Welland Canal.

Since 2014, Thorold has seen 4 Niagara Heritage Design Awards for renovations, façade improvements and adaptive reuse plus an honourable mention to the City of Thorold for their Downtown Streetscape Master Plan. In 2009 there were two Lieutenant Governor’s Heritage Awards – the City for Community Leadership and Pam Minns of LACAC for Lifetime Achievement.

In 2017, the City of Thorold has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious National Trust of Canada’s 2017 Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership. Architectural Conservancy of Ontario Awards were also awarded to Shannon and Michael Passero, owners of The Post Office and to historian and researcher, Sarah King Head for her report Beaverdams, a Cultural Heritage Landscape.
