Parks Canada have been working with stakeholders to recognize designated Historic Sites and Monuments. In 1924, the Board designated the Welland Canal as a National Historic Event and installed a bronze plaque near the Allanburg Bridge. In 2017, the Board updated and expanded the statement of commemorative intent for the Welland Canal National Historic Event designation. As per all new and revised designations, a standard bronze plaque is placed at a recommended location to commemorate the designation.
The new plaque was installed at Lock 7 Viewing Centre (50 Chapel Street South).
This is part of the Government of Canada’s accelerated plaque program.
The bronze HSMBC plaque is 30.25 ” (w) x 26.75 ” (h) and has an approximate weight of 110 lbs.
