Spend quality family time at Battle of Beaverdams Park, a 10-acre park with a bandshell in the heart of downtown Thorold. This historic park plays host to a wide variety of events throughout the year including Canada Day ceremonies. At one time the Welland Canal flowed through the park; remnants of it remain today. Historical plaques detail the town’s history. Mature trees, washrooms and benches encourage young and old to spend time in this peaceful green space.
Did You Know?
Battle of Beaverdams Park, in the heart of Thorold’s downtown, got its name from the fact that the battle’s cairn, which used to be on the east side of the Canal, was moved here because the Seaway was intending to build larger locks (it never happened). Bodies from the actual battlefield, identified as belonging to U.S. soldiers who died in the battle in 1813, are also interred there.
